Four Tips to Help Individuals with Special Needs Avoid Depression During the COVID-19 Pandemic

When individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities are shut in from quarantining or still practicing stay-at-home order initiatives, they may find themselves feeling down and despondent. It’s good to know that there are tips available that can help brighten their day.

The day-to-day life for individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities has significantly been disrupted due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Several day programs for adults have temporarily closed or are no longer in business, distance learning is now being considered in place of in-classroom settings, and community exposure is limited due to the increased social distancing efforts to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

The change in routine, coupled with a lack of understanding of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic can be overwhelming for both children and adults with special needs.

With all of the changes, it is easy to experience periods of depression or despair.

Some people start feeling down just as soon as their routine changes. Don’t let this happen! To stay happy and peaceful during a pandemic or community health crisis, try redirecting their time and energy on things that bring them joy.

All you need are a few simple ideas to jump-start their thinking in a more positive direction.

Consider these 4 tips to help gain a more positive mindset during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  1. Establish a new routine. Although your pre-COVID-19 schedule may have changed, it’s ok to establish a new daily routine. Try establishing scheduled times for starting the day in the morning, meal breaks, activities, and bed times, as close as possible to your previous schedule. Your new routine may be different from what you’re use to, but it will help bring a sense of normalcy to your day.
  2. Enjoy the outdoors. When the sun comes out, even if it’s otherwise hot or cold outside, take advantage of it. When your body is deprived of sunlight, it has a harder time making vitamin D. If you can get some sun, you’ll feel better and you’ll be better able to make it through each day. Try taking a walk around the neighborhood or enjoy some time sitting on the front porch or gardening in the back yard.
  3. Find activities that bring you joy. Take this time to work on learning new skills and having fun! It’s the perfect time to find a new hobby such as gardening, jewelry making, or creating some new artwork. There’s always a new TV show or new music being released that can help pass the time. Buying a new book for story time is a plus. Learning new skills can bring mental and physical benefits, while also finding a way to enjoy the day.
  4. Keep in touch. Talking to friends and family via platforms such as social media, video teleconferencing, or simply making a phone call can bring so much joy. Notes with a little personal message and picture are sure to bring a smile their face. Another fun idea is to watch a movie with a friends(s) using video chat. Just don’t forget the popcorn!

Depression is Treatable – Even if it’s Only Occasional

Let’s keep in mind that it’s important to treat depression. If feelings of depression run deep, it is best to consult with a doctor about the best treatment options. Focusing on strategies that work during the pandemic is the best way to shake the pandemic blues.
Let’s chose to be joyful. Focus on the things that matter which will result in happiness. The pandemic will not be around forever and there will be a ton of new things to do once it’s all behind us.
Let’s find new hobbies. If there is specific hobby that seems interesting, it will allow for keeping the mind occupied as we move through the pandemic.
